Minimize Junior R&T Associate in Remote Sensing for (Precision) Agriculture (M/F)

Date added: 24 July 2017

Organisation: Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST)

Location: Belvaux, Luxembourg

Nitrogen fertilization is of high importance in crop production but can meanwhile have a negative impact on the environment. Currently, the exceedance of critical values of nitrate in the ground water endangers health and has led to a complaint by the European Commission. Consequently, nitrogen fertilization should be adapted to plants' needs.

New remote sensing data like SENTINEL-2 with high spatial and high spectral resolution can give information on plants' status and can be used to create application maps for the farmers. The hired researcher will work on two projects:

  • Aim of the YPANEMA project is to analyse the N-status of wheat by using model inversion techniques (PROSAIL) and SENTINEL-2 data. The relevant field data will be acquired during several field campaigns. The trial site is located in the Champaign in France.
  • Aim of the BIOSCOPE project is to validate image based methods for plant nitrogen retrieval retrieved over a fertilisation experiment on potato crop.

  • Master of Science or and equivalent degree in geosciences, environmental sciences, geography or in a related discipline with a special focus on advanced quantitative remote sensing.

  • Processing of multispectral satellite images
  • Radiative transfer modelling and model inversion
  • Programming (Matlab, R, IDL)
  • Design and sampling of field data
